What Autoscience is building

Autoscience is building AI systems that do science. Not AI that assists scientists: AI that autonomously runs experiments, interprets results, and iterates on machine learning models without human direction. They already have a published proof point, an AI agent that produced peer-reviewed research accepted at an ICLR 2025 workshop, which is the first instance of a fully autonomous system contributing to top-tier academic literature. The platform is designed to deploy inside enterprise environments, training and improving customer models as a continuous autonomous process, not a one-time fine-tune. Their approach is RL-native: post-training, fine-tuning, and reinforcement signals rather than retrieval or prompt engineering.

Why this matters

The AI research bottleneck has always been human bandwidth. The best ML teams at Google, Meta, and Anthropic can run a few dozen experiments a week. Autoscience is betting that the same process, designed, hypothesised, tested, and written up, can be automated to run thousands of experiments in parallel. This isn't a distant bet: the ICLR acceptance proves the output already clears the bar for scientific peer review. General Catalyst leading the round is significant because their thesis in AI is infrastructure-layer companies, not just application wrappers. Toyota Ventures adds a dimension most miss: autonomous experimentation is directly applicable to materials science, battery chemistry, and powertrain optimisation. That portfolio alignment signals that Autoscience is already in conversations with industrial R&D customers, not just AI labs.

Investors: General Catalyst (lead), Toyota Ventures, Perplexity Fund, MaC Ventures, S32
