What ElevenLabs is building

Two Polish founders who grew up frustrated by badly dubbed American films (emotion, tone, and nuance lost in translation) built what is now the world's leading voice AI platform. Co-founded in April 2022, ElevenLabs reached 1 million users within five months of launching its beta in January 2023. They trained their text-to-speech models from first principles rather than fine-tuning existing ones. Voice naturalness is rated 9.5/10, the highest among competitors. The product suite has expanded well beyond text-to-speech. Eleven v3, their latest flagship model, supports 70+ languages with the highest emotional range in the industry. Flash v2.5 delivers ~75ms latency for real-time applications. The Conversational AI platform (launched November 2024) deploys interactive voice agents with native integrations into HubSpot, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Zendesk. The Dubbing Studio preserves a speaker's original voice across 29 languages. GenFM generates multi-speaker AI podcasts from uploaded content, a direct competitor to Google's NotebookLM. Eleven Music (August 2025) generates studio-grade music from natural language prompts, developed in collaboration with record labels and cleared for commercial use. The Voice Library hosts 10,000+ voices, and the Iconic Voices marketplace licenses celebrity voices. Michael Caine, Matthew McConaughey, and the estates of Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds, and Babe Ruth are on the platform. Enterprise customers include The Washington Post, HarperCollins, Square, MasterClass, and Paradox Interactive. Employees from over 75% of the Fortune 500 use the platform.

Why this matters

The funding trajectory tells the story: $2M pre-seed (January 2023), $19M Series A (June 2023, a16z), $80M Series B (January 2024, $1.1B unicorn), $250M Series C (January 2025, ~$3B, ICONIQ Growth), $100M employee tender offer (September 2025, $6.6B), and $500M Series D (February 2026, $11B, Sequoia led). That is a 10x valuation increase in two years. Revenue grew ~175% year-over-year to $330M ARR by end of 2025, with ~400 employees organised into micro-teams of 5 to 10 people with no traditional titles or management hierarchy. The founders still personally interview every single hire. In the first half of 2025 alone, they conducted 3,200 interviews and hired 143 people across 39 countries. The company is no longer just a voice tool. Mati Staniszewski told TechCrunch in September 2025 that 'the real money isn't in voice anymore', signalling expansion into conversational AI agents and music as growth vectors. The $100M tender offer at $6.6B was a classic pre-IPO liquidity event. Sequoia Capital leading the Series D (with Andrew Reed joining the board) is a strong IPO signal. Staniszewski said in July 2025 the company 'would like to be ready for an IPO in about five years,' though more recent language suggests that timeline could accelerate. Both founders have crossed the billion-dollar mark in personal net worth according to Forbes.
