What Blackswan Space is building
Blackswan builds the autonomy layer for spacecraft that need to get close to other spacecraft. It sells two products. The Mission Design Simulator (MDS) is real-time software for modeling orbital mechanics, rendezvous and docking, mega-constellation design and Monte Carlo analysis, with MATLAB/Simulink integration and synthetic visual data generation. The RPO Kit is a plug-and-play payload that gives a customer satellite vision-based navigation, so it can do rendezvous and proximity operations without a ground operator. Blackswan quotes 6DoF pose estimation at 10Hz+, with docking accuracy of ≤4mm and ≤0.5° orientation error. The RPO Kit started as a customer request. Klimavičius tells Payload that Orbit Fab co-founder Daniel Faber kept saying around 2021–22, 'If I can buy an RPO kit from the market right now, I would buy one. But I am struggling to find one.' Blackswan decided to be the off-the-shelf answer. Orbit Fab has since selected it for ASTRAL, a European in-space refuelling mission expected in 2028 and backed by €3.3M from the UK Space Agency and ESA. A first in-orbit demo as a hosted payload is planned for Q4 2027. The company bootstrapped for years on ESA contracts before raising (ESA is listed as its technical authority), so the software was paid for by an exacting customer before any VC money arrived.
Why this matters
Docking, refuelling, inspection and debris removal all depend on one capability: a spacecraft that can see another object and close on it safely without a human in the loop. Today most servicing companies build that navigation stack themselves, slowly and at great expense. A commercial, off-the-shelf RPO payload turns a bespoke engineering program into a line item, which is exactly what Orbit Fab asked for. Europe also wants this capability built at home. Iron Wolf's Viktoras Jucikas framed autonomy in orbit as one of the critical European technologies that has to be developed independently, and the ASTRAL funding from the UK Space Agency and ESA backs that up.
