What Feather is building
Feather sells a wheeled, two-armed humanoid robot as a development platform, not a finished product. The pitch is the Android of robotics: Feather supplies the body and the toolkit, and developers bring their own brains. Customers can swap the onboard compute and run AI models from Nvidia, Skild or Physical Intelligence rather than being locked into a Feather model. The hardware is deliberately practical. A 360° holonomic base that moves up to 1.3 m/s, about a meter of reach, 600mm of vertical travel to reach from floor to shelf height, and dual hot-swappable batteries for up to 10 hours of run time. The end effectors are modular and arm lengths can be adjusted for the task. The software side ships with an open Python and ROS2 SDK, built-in teleoperation, inverse kinematics, collision detection and simulation support. It's already working for money. Feather robots are deployed as cooks in restaurants and as cleaners in science labs, and one customer is a manufacturer with $4 billion in annual revenue. At $29,990 it's roughly half the price of Unitree's H2 Edu, per TechCrunch.
Why this matters
Foundation models for robots (Physical Intelligence, Skild, Nvidia's GR00T work) have moved faster than the hardware you can actually buy and build on. Hoa's point to TechCrunch is blunt: "You can't buy a Tesla robot today and develop on top" of it.
