What Golbriak Space is building
Golbriak builds optical communication terminals: small lasers that move data between satellites, aircraft and the ground instead of radio. The space terminal, ERMES, starts at 2U and 1.2 kg, draws 15W peak and does 2.5 Gbps in low Earth orbit, with link distances from 10,000 km on the base model. ARES is the airborne version, 2U + 2U and 1.8 kg, doing 2.5+ Gbps through the atmosphere. There is also a downlink service priced from €18 a minute at 1 Gbps, and a 10 Gbps system is planned for 2027. The pitch for laser over radio is concrete. Optical links need no ITU frequency coordination or license fees, and the beam is so narrow that it resists jamming, spoofing and tapping. The terminals also carry AI-enabled data hubs that can run third-party software, including ML models, so some processing happens on the terminal. This isn't a fresh idea chasing a market. The founders met in a PhD programme, won the ESA Copernicus Masters in 2017, built the optical link terminal for the ESA-funded FSSCat mission (launched 2020), and have an ESA OPS-SAT project scheduled for launch this month. They say they now have paying customers and are in advanced talks on programmes involving several thousand terminals.
Why this matters
Constellations are moving from radio to laser links because RF spectrum is crowded, slow to license and easy to jam, which matters more every year for defense and dual-use operators. The supply side hasn't caught up. Most laser terminals are still hand-built in small numbers, while constellation buyers want thousands. Golbriak's whole round is aimed at that gap: going from double-digit terminals a year to 200 a month, and eventually 300–400. Europe also wants sovereign space supply chains, and an Estonian supplier with ESA heritage fits that.
