What Restate is building
Restate is a durable execution runtime: code that picks up exactly where it left off after a crash, a deploy, or a three-day wait for a human approval. Developers write ordinary handlers in TypeScript, Python, Java, Kotlin, Go, Rust or Ruby. Restate journals every step, so a failure halfway through a payment flow or an agent loop resumes from the last completed step instead of starting over or double-charging. The primitives go further than 'workflows.' Restate has durable handlers and workflows, but also Virtual Objects (keyed state with single-writer semantics, so a shopping cart or an agent's memory can't be corrupted by concurrent calls), durable RPC and queues between services, timers and signals that wait for days without holding compute, and hierarchical flow control that can rate-limit by tenant or user. It ships as a single self-contained Rust binary built on a replicated command log, with no external database to run. You can use it as open source, on Restate Cloud, or BYOC. The pedigree explains the architecture. Stephan Ewen, Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann built Apache Flink and Data Artisans/Ververica, and Restate is basically stream-processing internals (logs, partitioned state, exactly-once) repackaged as an application runtime. Ewen's framing of the Series A is that durable execution made single processes reliable; the next job is keeping services, agents, workflows and state reliable as they interact.
Why this matters
AI agents are long-running, stateful, failure-prone programs that call flaky external APIs and sometimes wait on humans. That's exactly the workload durable execution was designed for, and agent frameworks mostly leave it out. Every team shipping an agent to production ends up rebuilding retries, idempotency and checkpointing badly. Restate's case against incumbents is weight: one binary with no separate database cluster, light enough to run in front of AWS Lambda or Cloudflare Workers. Since its 2024 seed, the company says it has gone from a Flink-team side bet to hundreds of production users, including Fortune 500 firms, with several six- and seven-figure contracts signed in recent months.

Hiring outlook
The careers page lists seven live roles: Developer Relations Lead (US), Product Marketing Manager (US), Solutions Architect (US), Product Designer (Europe), Design Engineer (Europe), Frontend Engineer (Europe) and a general US application. That lines up with the stated use of funds, a new San Francisco commercial hub and US expansion. The page also says 'work from anywhere.'

How to actually get hired at Restate
Why applying the normal way doesn't work
Restate runs an applicant tracking system, but hiring managers still work referrals first. A cold application to Restate isn't dead, it's just fourth in line behind internal referrals, sourced candidates and recruiter pipelines.

What to show them
Take a popular open-source agent example (a LangGraph or OpenAI Agents SDK tutorial), make it crash mid-run, and show the before and after: the naive version re-runs tool calls and double-sends an email, while the Restate version resumes cleanly. Publish it as a short post with a repo.

What Restate screens for
Singular is a European deep-tech fund, Redpoint led the seed and came back, and Capital One Ventures is the tell. A bank's venture arm backing a durable execution runtime means regulated payment and agent workflows are already a real buyer. The money is pointed at the US: every GTM role on the careers page is US-based, and the stated use of funds is the SF hub. For DevRel and Solutions Architect candidates, this is a chance to be the first US-side person at a company whose founders built infrastructure half of fintech runs on. The repo has about 4.5k GitHub stars, so a merged PR or a published example is a credible door-opener.

Don't make these mistakes
Don't explain durable execution to Stephan, and don't open with 'like Temporal butβ¦'. He co-created Apache Flink in 2010, has a PhD in database systems, and was CTO of Data Artisans; Restate publishes its own Temporal comparison. Generic 'distributed systems are hard' enthusiasm is noise to someone who has spent fifteen years on exactly-once semantics. Lead with a specific failure you hit in production (a duplicated side effect, a stuck saga, an agent that lost its context on redeploy) and how you'd model it in Restate.
Mistakes that kill Restate applications
A recycled CV gets rejected fast at Restate ( people). They notice.
Don't open with what you want. Open with what Restate is dealing with right now β AI agents are long-running, stateful, failure-prone programs that call flaky external APIs and sometimes wait on humans, and what you'd do about it.
Most AI applications get ghosted. A day-five follow-up can double your response rate.
