What SafeWorld is building
SafeWorld is an evaluation platform for robots that operate around people. Instead of waiting for the one-in-a-million event to happen on a warehouse floor, teams build scenarios in the browser and run high-fidelity simulations with realistic human motion. The goal is to find failure modes and put a number on risk before deployment. The core idea comes from Ding Zhao's 17 years of autonomous-vehicle safety research. You can't drive or operate your way to statistical confidence, because the dangerous cases are rare by definition. So you generate the rare-but-critical scenarios on purpose, and combine simulation with physical testing (Zhao calls it hybrid sim-to-real) so the results hold up in the real world. The customer list shows where it's going: automotive OEMs, warehouse automation and medical devices. These are industries where someone eventually has to sign a safety case. Anyware Robotics' CEO Thomas Tang described it as 'a scalable way to test challenging scenarios.'
Why this matters
Physical AI is moving from demos to deployment next to people: warehouse pickers, humanoids, surgical assistants. Learned policies don't come with the deterministic guarantees that classical functional-safety processes assume. Self-driving faced this problem first, and Zhao's lab worked on it there. SafeWorld bets the same scenario-based evaluation playbook becomes required infrastructure for every robotics company before regulators and insurers start demanding it. The 'Functional Safety Engineer' opening shows they plan to connect ML evaluation to the existing safety-standards world.

What SafeWorld screens for
A CMU endowment check and angels from Waymo, DeepMind, Nvidia and Generalist mean the people who ship autonomy want this layer to exist. Shine and a16z Speedrun co-leading a $12.2M seed into a six-person team is a bet on a rare mix: a world-class safety researcher plus two operators who have already built and sold a company together (Kyle and Simo, Pixlee). With seven open roles on six people, more than half of the company hasn't been hired yet.
Don't send a generic CV to SafeWorld. Mirror the job posting's language to get past automated screening.
Don't make these mistakes
Ding Zhao has spent 17 years on 'how do we know an autonomous system is safe enough to operate around people?' Don't treat robot safety as a new concern you just discovered, and don't open with sci-fi 'AI risk.' Kyle is a repeat founder who ran StartX, so he's read every generic 'passionate about robotics' email there is. Simo was Pixlee's first hire and spent five years on Salesforce Einstein security, so vague infra claims without numbers won't land.
Mistakes that kill SafeWorld applications
At people, a copy-paste CV is immediately obvious. It's an instant no.
Lead with their problem, not your ambition. SafeWorld is focused on Physical AI is moving from demos to deployment next to people: warehouse pickers, humanoids, surgical assistants β show you understand that.
Don't apply and wait. The median AI application gets no response ever. One follow-up at day five roughly doubles reply rates.
