What Satlyt is building
Satlyt doesn't build spacecraft. It writes the software layer that lets AI models run on other companies' satellites, so an operator can process imagery and telemetry in orbit and downlink the answer instead of the raw data. Rama Afullo compares it to VMware and Snowflake: a virtualization and data-routing layer across hardware Satlyt doesn't own. Applications can be uplinked to satellites already flying, retrofitted, or preloaded before launch. It has already flown twice. Earlier this year Satlyt ran Google DeepMind's Gemma onboard a Momentus spacecraft. The system processed imagery, produced an encrypted downlink-ready output and diagnosed injected software faults, and it cut the size of one fault-report transmission by more than 60%. The next mission flies on a TakeMe2Space spacecraft on SpaceX's Transporter-18. It carries applications for NASA (cloud-computing protocols from a $4M NASA Glenn STTR with the University of Houston), for the space-surveillance startup Stellerian, and for TakeMe2Space itself. The longer game is a shared compute cloud spanning several satellites, with a two-satellite attempt planned for next year. Afullo's framing: 'The folks like SpaceX who are doing orbital data centers β if they are the iPhone, we'll build Android as a horizontally integrated, open ecosystem.' Operators pay for installs, defense and aerospace primes run paid pilots, and agency R&D programs fund the protocol work.
Why this matters
The bottleneck for most satellites isn't the sensor, it's the downlink. Ground-station time is scarce and expensive, so every byte you don't have to send is money saved. Afullo says onboard compression and triage is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars per satellite per year. Meanwhile, vertically integrated players like SpaceX and Google (whose first Project Suncatcher prototype shares Satlyt's launch) are building their own orbital compute stacks. That leaves thousands of non-Starlink operators without a software layer of their own, and Satlyt is aiming to be it, with a stated goal of running on 20% of satellites by the end of the decade. There's also an Africa angle: TechCabal notes Africa holds under 1% of global data-center capacity, and Satlyt already has MoUs with the Kenya Space Agency and Angola's GGPEN.

Hiring outlook
Explicit. The company's announcement says the round goes to expanding 'the engineering and customer delivery teams', and the careers page lists six live roles, mostly senior and mostly in the Bay Area.

How to actually get hired at Satlyt
Why applying the normal way doesn't work
Satlyt uses an ATS, but referrals still come first. Cold applications aren't ignored β they're just behind referrals, sourced candidates, and recruiter picks.

What Satlyt screens for
Non Sibi's Kent Lucas gave the cleanest version of the thesis: Satlyt doesn't need data centers in space to happen, it just rides the number of satellites going up. NASA astronaut Bernard Harris, a Non Sibi partner, helped anchor the conviction, and Africa-focused funds (TLCOM, Enza, Launch Africa) bring the Nairobi engineering base. The hiring window is right now. Six senior reqs went up alongside a fresh launch, a TechCrunch Disrupt Battlefield slot (Oct 13β15), and a two-satellite cloud planned for next year. A forward-deployed engineer who can get a customer's model onto a satellite bus is the role that compounds here.
Don't send a generic CV to Satlyt. Mirror the job posting's language to get past automated screening.
Don't make these mistakes
Rama pitched in-orbit compute inside both SpaceX and Google and got told no both times, so don't open with 'space is so exciting' or orbital-data-center hype. He has explicitly said Satlyt is not trying to replace terrestrial data centers right now. Also avoid treating this as an Africa-impact story first: the product sells on downlink economics to US operators, NASA and defense primes. Lead with bandwidth, fault tolerance on constrained hardware, or a real customer delivery problem.
Mistakes that kill Satlyt applications
At people, a copy-paste CV is immediately obvious. It's an instant no.
Lead with their problem, not your ambition. Satlyt is focused on The bottleneck for most satellites isn't the sensor, it's the downlink β show you understand that.
Don't apply and wait. The median AI application gets no response ever. One follow-up at day five roughly doubles reply rates.
