The product

What TrustedRouter is building

TrustedRouter is an AI gateway: one OpenAI-compatible API, change the base_url, and get routing across roughly 690 models from many providers. The difference from OpenRouter is the trust model. The gateway runs inside a Trusted Execution Environment and publishes attestation evidence tying the running image to public source code, so a customer can verify that neither TrustedRouter nor the data center can read prompts or outputs. Prompts and outputs aren't logged and are kept out of control-plane and metadata systems. Every route is labeled with its privacy level (zero data retention, end-to-end encrypted), and routing fails closed: if no route meets the privacy floor you set, the request is stopped instead of quietly falling back to a weaker provider. Gateway, SDKs and deployment config are open source. Pricing is a 5.5% fee on provider costs with no seats or monthly plan, bring-your-own-keys support, and spend limits that count in-flight requests. The early traction is on open-weight models. Semafor reports DeepSeek, Zhipu and Moonshot models are among the most popular on the platform, which fits the pitch: companies want cheap Chinese open weights without sending data to wherever the inference happens. A published case study has a legal customer routing 170,974 legal documents. Joseph Perla's next ambitions are a marketplace he calls the "New York Token Exchange" and "model IPOs" for new open-weight releases.

The money

Why this matters

Routing has become a real category. Semafor notes OpenRouter, the largest player, started with a $12.5M seed in February 2025 and has since agreed to sell to Stripe for $7.5 billion. That proves developers will pay a toll to stay model-agnostic. What OpenRouter-style routers don't offer is a verifiable answer to "who can see my data?" That question blocks legal, healthcare and finance teams from touching the cheapest open-weight models. Confidential computing turns that from a policy promise into something you can attest to. If the router can't read your traffic, compliance stops being the reason not to route, and the router can compete on price and reliability for regulated buyers.

Investors: Sierra Ventures (lead), Earlier $1.25M seed angels: Sam Lessin (Slow Ventures), Bill Tai, Linda Avey, George Xing

How to actually get hired at TrustedRouter

Why applying the normal way doesn't work

There's an ATS, but at TrustedRouter, referrals get priority. Your cold application competes with sourced candidates and internal recommendations.

What to show them

Independently verify TrustedRouter's published attestation: reproduce the build, match the measurement to the running image, and write up exactly what is and isn't proven (side channels, provider-side visibility on non-E2EE routes, key release). Include one concrete hardening suggestion.

A cold email that works at TrustedRouter

Subject: Confidential Computing / Security Infrastructure Engineer, [your one-line proof]
Hi Joseph, I reproduced your gateway build and checked the attestation against the published source. It holds, with one gap I'd close in how [component] is measured; writeup attached. Answering your four questions: [built], [hardest failure], [what I'd improve], [GitHub].

What TrustedRouter screens for

Sierra Ventures leading a $6M round six weeks after launch, on top of a $1.25M angel round with Sam Lessin, Bill Tai and 23andMe's Linda Avey, says investors read the OpenRouter-Stripe deal as category validation and want the privacy-first alternative. The careers page doubles as a filter: four specific asks and an email address. A tiny team with a fresh $6M and a founder with big plans (token exchange, model IPOs) needs systems and security engineers before anything else. Answer the four questions well and you skip the queue.

A tailored CV beats a generic one. Use TrustedRouter's job description language to clear filters.

Avoid

Don't make these mistakes

A generic "I'm passionate about AI infrastructure" note. Joseph is a four-time exited founder and ex-Facebook/Lyft engineer, and the careers page spells out what he wants: work you built and can explain precisely, the hardest production failure you diagnosed, what you'd improve at TrustedRouter, and evidence. Skip any of those four and you're ignored. Also don't treat the privacy story as marketing; it's attestation, so speak to TEEs concretely.

Mistakes that kill TrustedRouter applications

  • A recycled CV gets rejected fast at TrustedRouter ( people). They notice.

  • Don't open with what you want. Open with what TrustedRouter is dealing with right now — Routing has become a real category, and what you'd do about it.

  • Most Tech applications get ghosted. A day-five follow-up can double your response rate.
