What Ambio is building

Ambio sells recycled plastics to plastic converters across Europe, and it does so as the supplier of record, not as a marketplace that takes a fee and walks away. It qualifies each recycled grade, tests deliveries against the customer's production requirements, and takes responsibility for sourcing, quality and freight from first sample to long-term contract. Buyers can purchase spot or under contract across rHDPE, rLDPE, rLLDPE, rPP, rPVC, rPA, rABS, rPS and rPC. The software is the reason the principal model can work. Ambio's matching engine compares measurable properties such as density, melt flow index and impact strength against a customer's spec and against how similar material has actually performed in past deliveries. LLMs read the unstructured side: supplier datasheets, certificates, emails. Supplier verification still includes site visits, document review and RecyClass certification checks. Every transaction adds to a proprietary database of recyclers and grades that, in Elmo Pakkanen's words, "didn't exist, so we had to build it from scratch." The stated goal is blunt. Tommi Bergström: "Our goal is to predict if the material works or not before sampling even happens." Today the company says it has delivered to more than 250 converters in 15 countries, sourcing from Poland, Romania, the Baltics, Germany, France and Benelux, and selling into the Nordics and German-speaking Europe.

Why this matters

Recycled plastic is a commodity that doesn't behave like one. Bergström's framing: "When you're buying virgin plastics, you know exactly what you're getting." With recyclate, quality varies by source and by batch, data is patchy, and buyers often learn whether material works only when it's running on their line. Tech.eu puts the structure plainly: roughly 50,000 EU companies use plastics as a raw material against about 1,500 that recycle them. That is a fragmented supply side selling into a large, risk-averse demand side, which is exactly where a trusted intermediary with better data can take share. Regulation keeps pushing converters toward recycled content, but the procurement process hasn't changed: phone calls, samples, and hoping the next batch matches the last one. A player that underwrites quality, and gets better at predicting it with every delivery, is building a data moat inside a physical business. That combination of software margins on top of trading volume is what b2venture is betting on when it calls Ambio the future "central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and beyond."
