Giraffe Bio makes biochemical reagents for copper flotation, the step where chemicals make target minerals float or sink so operators can separate them from crushed ore. The key design choice is that the product is cell-free. Giraffe grows engineered microbes in its own bioreactors to produce the compounds, then ships only the molecules to the mine. "We can leverage all of the biological machinery without having to deal with keeping alive a microbe," Buffo Sempé told TechCrunch. That sets it apart from approaches like Endolith or Ceibo that put live microbes into harsh mining conditions. The reagents are built to drop into existing flotation circuits and dosing equipment, complementing conventional collectors with no new infrastructure. The company's site reports +3–5 percentage points of copper recovery uplift in lab-scale validation, and says results vary by ore and operating conditions. Over the past year it has moved from the lab to testing with international mining companies on several ore types. Giraffe is backed by SOSV (via IndieBio) and was the first Latin American company selected for the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program. Its biomolecules can also replace some of the toxic chemicals now used in flotation.
