The product

What Scuba is building

Scuba is a shared memory for a team, built so that people and their AI agents work from the same context. The basic unit is a Capture: an article, screenshot, doc, video, Slack thread, text or voice note (up to 90 minutes, fully transcribed) saved from the browser, any app, an agent, or straight into Scuba. Scuba summarizes and organizes every Capture automatically. There is no wiki to maintain and, in the company's words, "no manual edits required." On top of Captures sit three primitives. Collections group shared context around a launch, a key client, company strategy or a competitive shift. Briefings are daily digests that flag new trends, important changes and conflicts in what the team is saving. Sessions are AI conversations that start from what the team already knows instead of a blank prompt: pressure-test an idea, draft a proposal, plan next steps, with interactive citations back to the source Captures and web search when needed. The agent angle is the real bet. Scuba exposes the team's memory over MCP, so Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor can read and create Captures, and @Scuba works inside Slack. Noah Desai Weiss puts the thesis in one line: "The frontier models aren't intelligence bound. They're context constrained." Scuba wants to be the layer that holds a team's knowledge, decisions and direction over time, so any agent you point at a problem already knows the backstory.

The money

Why this matters

Every team adopting agents hits the same wall. The model is capable, but it doesn't know why the team killed the last pricing plan, what the big client said on Tuesday, or which strategy doc is stale. That context lives in heads, DMs and browser tabs, and today it reaches the agent only when someone pastes it into a prompt. MCP has made it cheap for one store of context to feed every agent a team uses, which makes 'who owns the shared memory' a real platform question for the first time. The team is unusually qualified to answer it. Weiss started Slack's Search, Learning & Intelligence group in 2016 and later ran product as CPO, and Slack's core insight was that a team's conversation becomes its system of record. Scuba is the same idea pointed at the agent era: capture is ambient, organization is automatic, and the output is context agents can use. The angel list (Slack's two co-founders, plus the founders of Instagram, Stripe, Dropbox, Vanta, Harvey and Granola) reads like operators who have felt this problem inside their own companies.

How to actually get hired at Scuba

Why applying the normal way doesn't work

There's an ATS, but at Scuba, referrals get priority. Your cold application competes with sourced candidates and internal recommendations.

What to show them

Build a small MCP server that serves a pile of mixed team artifacts (Slack exports, docs, voice-note transcripts) to Claude or Cursor. Write a 20-task eval of real questions like 'why did we drop plan X?' and show how retrieval changes answer quality: naive top-k against a version that tracks decisions and supersession over time.

A cold email that works at Scuba

Subject: Applied AI Engineer (retrieval + agent systems, NYC in-office), [your one-line proof]
Hi Dolapo, your launch line was that models are context constrained, so I measured it. I built an MCP memory server over a fake team's Slack, docs and voice notes and wrote 20 'why did we decide X' tasks. Naive top-k kept surfacing decisions that had since been reversed; tracking what superseded what fixed most of them. Eval and repo attached. I'd love to work on this in the West Village.

What Scuba screens for

Accel led both rounds, and in the release its partner Andrew Braccia compares Scuba to Slack's channels and to Cursor. Accel was an early Slack investor and is betting the Slack product team can do it again. IVP co-leading the seed is unusual for a growth fund and tells you how competitive the round was. The founders have worked together since 2011 (Google, Foursquare, Slack), and this is their fourth project together. The team is ten people: a CEO, a CTO, a founding designer and seven founding engineers. The three open roles went up the day before launch, so the next hires will set the culture, and an in-office, LinkedIn-only application filters hard for people who really want this.

Avoid

Don't make these mistakes

Don't pitch Noah on what makes a great PM or on product-led growth. He wrote the widely shared '10 Traits of Great PMs', has talked through Slack's PLG playbook on Lenny's Podcast, First Round and 20VC, and ran Slack's self-serve business, so repeating his own ideas back to him is noise. Skip 'second brain' or note-taking comparisons as well: Scuba is pitched as team memory for agents, not personal notes. Dolapo has built teams at Facebook (AR, Stories), Slack (Virtual HQ) and The Browser Company, so 'I love building delightful consumer UX' tells him nothing. Show him a retrieval or eval result.

Mistakes that kill Scuba applications

  • A recycled CV gets rejected fast at Scuba ( people). They notice.

  • Don't open with what you want. Open with what Scuba is dealing with right now — Every team adopting agents hits the same wall, and what you'd do about it.

  • Most AI applications get ghosted. A day-five follow-up can double your response rate.
