What Chift is building

Chift is a unified API for the financial software European businesses actually run on. Gauthier Henroz calls it a power strip: a software company integrates once with Chift and gets a normalised connection to more than 120 systems (the site now says 150+) across six categories: accounting (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage 50 and a long tail of national packages), invoicing (Qonto, Dolibarr), point of sale (Zettle, SumUp, Square), e-commerce (Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon), payments (Stripe, PayPal) and hotel property-management systems (Oracle OPERA Cloud, Mews, Noovy). Chift builds and maintains every connector, so when a vendor changes its API the customer's integration keeps working. The product has three layers now. Unified APIs are the standardised endpoints where the developer stays in control of data and workflow. Agentic Syncs are pre-built bidirectional flows (invoices to the ledger, POS sales to accounting) that a customer switches on in minutes rather than coding. Chift for Agents is the 2026 addition: an MCP server so Claude and other agents can act on financial data through the same permissioned surface, automated field mapping, a CLI, and 'Chifty', a dashboard assistant that diagnoses a broken connection in plain language. Underneath sits a synced data layer so queries over years of history don't hammer the source systems. The customer list is the argument that this is infrastructure, not a wrapper: Revolut, Qonto, Pennylane, Agicap, Pleo, Sage, Mollie, Spendesk and Skello all build on Chift. 150+ software companies use it to reach more than 50,000 end businesses across 13 countries, with the deepest positions in France, Belgium and the Netherlands and Spain added a year ago. The company almost didn't take this shape. In 2022 the founders launched a tool for IT integrators serving SMEs, found the model didn't work, ran roughly 100 interviews with IT departments, software publishers and integrators, and rebuilt around what the publishers were asking for. Gauthier has described spending about six months effectively alone in the middle of that pivot. The lesson they took was to go narrow and deep on Europe, country by country, rather than build a generalist connector platform.

Why this matters

Europe is 27 tax regimes and dozens of national accounting packages, and the software that has to talk to them is being rebuilt right now by two forces at once. The first is mandatory e-invoicing: Belgium made B2B e-invoicing compulsory from 1 January 2026, France's rollout began on 1 September 2026, and Germany has required businesses to be able to receive e-invoices since 2025. Every fintech, ERP and vertical SaaS product selling into those markets now needs live, correct connectivity to the customer's accounting system, not a CSV export. The second is AI agents, which are only useful on financial data if there is a normalised, permissioned layer they can act through, which is exactly what Chift's MCP server is. The market numbers Chift and its investors cite: around 30 million SMBs across Europe and the UK, and a European accounting-services sector worth roughly €174 billion that is still largely manual. Pauline Brunel of BlackFin, a fintech-only fund with more than €4 billion under management, put the investment case bluntly: financial data connectivity is genuinely hard to build in Europe, and AI raises the stakes further. The proof that the difficulty is the moat is the revenue: more than tenfold growth since the 2024 seed, with the largest European fintechs choosing to build on Chift rather than maintain their own connector teams. The four new markets this round funds (UK, Nordics, Germany, Italy) each have their own accounting incumbents, which is precisely why a generalist can't follow.

Investors: BlackFin Capital Partners (Pauline Brunel), Entourage, Shapers, Seeder Fund, Wallonie Entreprendre

Hiring outlook

Chift has stated it is recruiting 15 positions across Europe in H2 2026, and the careers page at chift.eu/careers is live (it links to a Notion job board for individual listings). The raise is explicitly tied to entering four new countries and building the agentic layer, both of which are headcount. The company was around 10 people in mid-2024, so 15 hires is a large step-change for the team.

How to actually get hired at Chift

Why applying the normal way doesn't work

Chift runs an applicant tracking system, but hiring managers still work referrals first. A cold application to Chift isn't dead, it's just fourth in line behind internal referrals, sourced candidates and recruiter pipelines.

What to show them

Build a connector to one European accounting or POS system Chift doesn't list yet (pick one from the market you know: a national package in the Nordics, Germany or Italy) and normalise its invoices and journal entries into a unified schema. Ship the auth flow, the pagination and rate-limit handling, and a test suite that catches the vendor changing a field. Then write the half-page on what the system does differently from Xero or Sage and why a naive mapping breaks. That write-up is the hire signal.

A cold email that works at Chift

Subject: Integration / Connector Engineer (Brussels — building and maintaining connectors to national accounting, POS and PMS systems), [your one-line proof]
Hi Gauthier, your line about Europe being 27 countries of fragmentation is what I've spent the last [N] years living: I maintain integrations to [named system] and its API reports [specific quirk, e.g. VAT on a different basis from the ledger]. I built a normalised connector to it against a unified invoice schema over the weekend, with tests for the two ways the vendor has broken it in the past year. Code is here. If the Nordics/DACH/Italy expansion needs someone who already knows the incumbents, I'd like to talk.

What Chift screens for

BlackFin only does fintech and financial services, and its investment director said the quiet part out loud: connectivity in Europe is hard to build, and that is the asset. The round is structured around four country launches and an agentic layer, which means the next 15 hires split into two very different profiles: people who can open a market where the accounting incumbent is unknown outside its borders, and engineers who can make a connector configure itself. Chift was listed twice among Sifted's fastest-growing startups and grew revenue more than tenfold on a €2.3M seed, so this is a small, capital-efficient team about to more than double. Being early and specific about which country or which system you would own is the edge.

A tailored CV beats a generic one. Use Chift's job description language to clear filters.

Don't make these mistakes

Do not pitch Chift as 'the Plaid/Merge of Europe' or ask why they don't just go global. Gauthier has said publicly that he chose Europe on purpose, country by country, because the fragmentation is the whole point, and he spent six months alone in a pivot to get there. A note that frames Europe as a stepping stone reads as someone who missed the thesis. Also skip 'LLMs make integrations trivial now'; the product exists because connectors break and someone has to own them. Gauthier sold complex software at EASI and did risk advisory at Deloitte before founding, and Henry is a KU Leuven/UCL double-degree CTO who has written every early connector. Lead with a specific integration you have fought: a national accounting package's SOAP API, an e-invoicing platform's edge case, a POS that reports sales on a different fiscal day than the ledger. Name the system.

Mistakes that kill Chift applications

Generic CVs stand out at a -person company — and not in a good way. Fastest path to rejection.

Don't open with what you want. Open with what Chift is dealing with right now — Europe is 27 tax regimes and dozens of national accounting packages, and the software that has to talk to them is being rebuilt right now by two forces at once, and what you'd do about it.

Most Tech applications get ghosted. A day-five follow-up can double your response rate.
