The product
What Fragment is building
Fragment is a programmable money layer with three products. Ledgers lets you define a schema for how money flows through your business and generates typed SDKs from it, with double-entry accounting, entry conditions, strong consistency, multi-currency and idempotency built in. Payments moves and tracks money through a single API call. Recon reconciles bank statements, payout CSVs, invoices and payroll reports back against the ledger. The new pitch is "the financial system for agents." Fragment ships an MCP server so agents can operate on the ledger directly, and Fortune describes the core safeguard plainly: the system checks the books balance before money moves. The target customer is the vertical AI company that wants to automate its own customers' financial operations (billing, settlement, payouts) without building a ledger from scratch and getting it subtly wrong. This isn't a new product looking for a story. FirstMark says Fragment has run in production for five years as the core ledger engine for Bill.com, Ramp, Whop and AtoB, handling hundreds of millions of transactions. Fortune puts the paying customer count at roughly 50 to 60.
The money
Why this matters
Every fintech eventually rebuilds a ledger, and most do it badly the first time. The double-entry, idempotency and reconciliation problems are well understood but tedious to get right at scale. That was already a good business for Fragment. What changes with agents is that software, not a person, starts initiating money movement. A model that hallucinates a field name in a chat reply is embarrassing. A model that double-pays a vendor is a loss. The correctness layer moves from 'nice to have' to the thing that decides whether you're allowed to automate at all. Fragment's edge is that its correctness guarantees were battle-tested by Ramp and Bill.com before the agent wave arrived. Selling an MCP server on top of a ledger already trusted by large fintechs is a much easier conversation than selling agent-safety as a fresh idea.

What to show them
Build a tiny agent over Fragment's MCP server (or a mock of it) that tries to issue a refund and a payout against the same balance concurrently, and show how entry conditions plus idempotency keys stop the double-spend. Write up the failure mode you'd expect without them.
A cold email that works at Fragment
What Fragment screens for
FirstMark's thesis, in Adam Nelson's words, is that Fragment gives engineers 'a harness with the awareness, controls, and correctness to build and run internet scale financial systems', and he told Fortune 'this ecosystem is about to explode.' The round closed in mid-2025 but was only announced now, timed to the agents repositioning. That means the capital is already in the bank and the team is hiring into a launch, not waiting on a close. With about a dozen people and applications going straight to the CTO's inbox, a sharp, technical cold email gets read by the person who decides.

Avoid
Don't make these mistakes
Tom is a serial founder who has been selling ledgers to fintech engineers for five years; he doesn't need double-entry explained to him, and 'I'm passionate about fintech' says nothing. Also skip generic agent hype: his own framing is that agents need correctness and controls, so pitching speed or autonomy without guardrails cuts against the product. Lead with a specific ledger or reconciliation bug you've personally shipped or fixed.
Mistakes that kill Fragment applications
A recycled CV gets rejected fast at Fragment ( people). They notice.
Don't open with what you want. Open with what Fragment is dealing with right now — Every fintech eventually rebuilds a ledger, and most do it badly the first time, and what you'd do about it.
