About the role

From Karman Industries's posting on Ashby, as they wrote it

Karman Industries

Karman Industries is a Torrance-based thermal technology company building the backbone for giga-scale AI infrastructure. Founded by a team from SpaceX, Rocket Lab, and GE, Karman is moving beyond legacy cooling with the launch of the HPU (Heat Processing Unit)—a new category of thermal architecture designed for the 100kW+ rack era.

The HPU shrinks the exterior mechanical yard by up to 80% while reducing peak energy consumption by 10%+. Unlike traditional systems, the Karman HPU provides zero-water (WUE 0) cooling that ensures high-TDP GPUs and HBM4 memory stay at optimal thermal setpoints without throttling.

Founded in 2024, we’re a fast-growing team of passionate professionals dedicated to making a tangible impact on the future of humanity. We design, build, and test real hardware, and we lead with ownership: you’ll own your work from concept to hardware and help shape how we scale. Our values are Ownership, Performance Excellence, Radical Transparency, and Customer-Centricity.

Join us in our mission to transform the industry and contribute to a more sustainable world.

Regulatory Compliance Specialist

We are looking for a detailed-oriented and proactive Regulatory Compliance Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will be the driving force behind getting our cutting-edge hardware and equipment certified for global markets. You will bridge the gap between our engineering teams and international testing laboratories, ensuring every product we ship is safe, compliant, and legally approved for sale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the Certification Lifecycle: Manage product approval projects from the initial R&D design phase through to final lab testing and market launch.
  • Be the Primary Liaison: Coordinate directly with third-party testing laboratories and certification bodies (e.g., UL, Intertek/ETL, TÜV, CSA) to scope projects, schedule testing, and resolve compliance bottlenecks.
  • Translate Complex Standards: Interpret global regulatory and safety standards (such as CE, FCC, IEC, ISO, ASHRAE, NEMA, NFPA, ASME, etc.) into actionable technical requirements for our engineering and product development teams.
  • Compile Technical Files: Build and maintain accurate and audit ready technical documentation, including test reports, schematics, risk assessments, and Declarations of Conformity.
  • Lead Audits & Inspections: Coordinate and support factory audits, quality system checks, and ongoing surveillance visits required to maintain active certifications.
  • Monitor the Regulatory Landscape: Keep a pulse on evolving regional safety laws and standard updates, proactively advising leadership on necessary product changes.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Technical Compliance, or a related field. Candidates without a degree but with 10+ years of experience in a comparable compliance role will also be considered.
  • 5+ years managing product compliance, regulatory affairs, or safety testing for hardware in a manufacturing environment.
  • A record of obtaining and maintaining product certifications such as UL, CE, ETL, FCC, or CSA.
  • Comfortable reading engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and dense regulatory documents.
  • Able to manage multiple test programs and lab schedules at the same time.
  • Strong writing and speaking skills, including writing technical reports and working through test requirements and findings with external engineers.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with new technology or in a start-up environment.
  • Experience supporting factory audits, quality system checks, and ongoing surveillance visits.
  • Experience with mechanical and industrial standards such as ASME, ASHRAE, NFPA, and NEMA, in addition to electrical marks like UL and CE.
  • Experience getting products approved in international markets beyond the US.

Role level to be determined during interview process
