What Helogen is building

Helogen builds the whole factory, not a payload that rents space on someone else's. The stack has three layers. HEL-IOS is the autonomous manufacturing system: a closed-loop orbital version of terrestrial precision biomanufacturing covering cell and tissue cultivation, media and fluid management, environmental control, processing, separation, harvest, and in-process quality monitoring, with GMP and regulated production designed in from the start. Bolted into it is CELS, the analysis system that won NASA's 2025 TechLeap Prize, providing real-time characterisation via imaging, spectroscopy and sequencing so production can be monitored and controlled with little to no human intervention from the ground. Underneath that sits spacecraft and infrastructure. Helogen inverts the usual order: most spacecraft are designed first and the science is made to fit inside, whereas Helogen builds the bus around the biology, the manufacturing process and the thermal and power budget, from 6U platforms up to vehicles carrying 60kg of payload. Keystar, targeted fully operational in 2028, is the lights-out orbital base designed to deliver up to 50kW to docked payloads with thermal management, autonomy, comms and docking built in, so production systems stop rebuilding that infrastructure every mission. The defence variant is called Keyshield. The products are bio-derived materials for regenerative medicine and industry: orthopedic scaffolds, recombinant protein polymers, biologics, human tissue models. Two missions fly in October 2026 across separate rideshares, one manufacturing artificial retina material for LambdaVision in what is that company's first mission beyond the ISS, the other producing Helogen's own biomaterials for knee and shoulder repair. D-Orbit is a partner on one of them. These are the first of eight missions Helogen plans over the year, each designed to retire risk and generate the quality data the regulatory path needs.

Why this matters

The physics has been understood for decades. On Earth, gravity drives mechanical forces that constrain how cells, proteins and other biological structures organise as they grow; in microgravity those forces drop away and materials can form in ways that are difficult or impossible to reproduce terrestrially. Biology behaves differently too, with altered gene expression and changed cell growth and tissue formation. None of that is the bet. As Shishir Bankapur puts it, what has been missing is the infrastructure and the regulatory pathway to manufacture repeatedly, autonomously, and for human use. So the interesting claim in this round is not scientific, it is regulatory. The October flights are explicitly framed as the beginning of a GMP-equivalence argument: bioburden control, material recovery, process consistency, traceability, documented quality systems, plus the opening work for FDA oversight of Helogen's own materials. Whoever establishes that standard first sets the template every subsequent orbital manufacturer has to meet, and there is currently no incumbent supplier in the category. RRE's Will Porteous, who has invested in space for more than a decade, describes it as the most complete vision for scaling biomanufacturing in space in the sector. For a candidate that is the honest read: Helogen is a small hardware company attempting a regulatory first, and the deadline is October.

Hiring outlook

The round is explicitly earmarked to expand the core aerospace engineering and molecular biology workforces, and three roles are live on the careers page right now with published salary bands, including a founding-level marketing hire. Scale is modest and honest: the Mechanical Engineer II post says you would be joining a team that includes a Mechanical Engineer, a Head of Software and a Head of Engineering, so this is a handful of people, not a hiring wave.

How to actually get hired at Helogen

Why applying the normal way doesn't work

There's an ATS, but at Helogen, referrals get priority. Your cold application competes with sourced candidates and internal recommendations.

What to show them

Show one vehicle or subsystem you took from concept to flight-ready hardware, with the mass, thermal and structural margins written down and the one decision you got wrong. Helogen designs the bus around the biology and the thermal budget rather than the other way round, so a short teardown of how you would size structures and thermal for a 60kg biological payload, with your assumptions exposed, is more useful than a portfolio.

A cold email that works at Helogen

Subject: Founding Marketing Lead (Los Angeles / NYC / SF, on-site, $160K–$210K + equity), [your one-line proof]
Hi Shishir, your spacecraft page says you build the bus around the biology rather than fitting the science inside a finished design, which mostly becomes a thermal problem once you are running bioreactors. I owned [specific subsystem] from concept through flight and sketched what the thermal margin looks like for a 60kg payload class on your architecture. I think the constraint bites earlier than the 50kW Keystar number suggests. Happy to be wrong on paper before October.

What Helogen screens for

RRE co-leading with Oceans, plus One Way Ventures, Blisce, AUM, Aurelia Foundry and Mana VC, is a syndicate assembled for a hardware company that has to keep flying. Porteous is not just a GP here, he is COO of the fund and has a decade of space investing behind the thesis, and his stated reason for leading is the completeness of the scaling vision rather than any single technology. The window is unusually legible: eight missions this year, two flying in October, and a stated intent to build toward a Series A on the back of that cadence. Joining now means your work is on a vehicle within months rather than years, and it means being in the room when the first GMP and FDA documentation for orbital biomanufacturing gets written, which is a credential that does not currently exist anywhere else.

A tailored CV beats a generic one. Use Helogen's job description language to clear filters.

Don't make these mistakes

Do not send the space-is-the-future email. Bankapur's own framing is that the science has been known for decades and the missing pieces are infrastructure and regulatory pathway, so enthusiasm about microgravity reads as the part he already solved. Equally, do not pitch this as a research company: the podcast description flags that the most common misconception about Helogen is exactly that, and the team draws a hard line between research and manufacturing. The team also describes itself as valuing execution over perfection, clarity over complexity, ownership over handholding, and being scrappy enough to wear multiple hats, so a polished narrative CV is worth less than one piece of flight hardware you owned end to end. Lead with something you built that had to survive a real environment and a real schedule.
