Scaffold
The data layer that makes homebuilder, contractor, and supplier systems agree

What Scaffold is building
Scaffold is operations software for the trade contractors who build America's houses, and the product is deliberately not another app. It connects to the portals of 29 of the top 30 US homebuilders, ingests job data, purchase orders, and schedules from each of them, and uses machine learning to normalize all of it into a single common record. From that record it automatically creates jobs, schedules POs, and syncs changes back into whatever system the contractor already runs. Approval workflows stay human: nothing resolves without confirmation. The core insight comes from Ben Johnson's mother, who worked at an electrical contractor: the specialized part of the job was 10% of her time, and 90% was mundane, repeatable administrative work. Builder portals are the reason. As Johnson told HousingWire, 'every single one of those portals is different. Almost none of them have APIs, so they can only be accessed via a web portal.' Scaffold's job is to automate the 90% without touching the 10% that requires judgment. The three stages on the site are Ingest, Universalize, Automate. Reported results within 60 days: roughly 50% fewer dry runs (crews showing up to sites that are not ready), 89% fewer errors, and an 83% reduction in PO processing time. The company says it has processed 500,000+ purchase orders. Named customers include Windsor, Majestic Surfaces, InCharge Electric, Hollywood Crawford, and The Roof Depot.
Why this matters
The cap table is the argument. D.R. Horton and Pulte are the two largest homebuilders in the US, and Builders FirstSource is the largest supplier; all three put money into a seed round for a tool their own trade partners use. D.R. Horton's CEO Paul Romanowski said it directly: 'No single builder fixes it alone. We invested because infrastructure like this only works for everyone.' That is a coordination problem being solved by the parties who benefit from the coordination, which is rare. Ivy Zelman, the housing analyst who called the 2006 top, framed the timing: 'Construction efficiency is one of the few places where savings remain.' With margins on new homes compressed, the builders are funding the plumbing that removes friction from their supply chain rather than building it themselves.

How to actually get hired at Scaffold
Why applying the normal way doesn't work
Scaffold runs an applicant tracking system, but hiring managers still work referrals first. A cold application to Scaffold isn't dead, it's just fourth in line behind internal referrals, sourced candidates and recruiter pipelines.
Who to contact at Scaffold
What to show them
Pick two public homebuilder or supplier portals with different PO/schedule formats. Build a pipeline that extracts line items and dates from both into a single schema, then show how it survives a layout change. Include your entity-resolution approach for matching a lot/address across sources.
A cold email that works at Scaffold
What Scaffold screens for
Navitas Capital is a proptech-specialist fund whose LPs include the largest homebuilders, and Louis Schotsky said the quiet part: 'The largest homebuilders invest with us to find companies like Scaffold.' The strategic investors are also the distribution channel; the builders can push Scaffold to every trade partner in their network. Five of six open roles are engineering and every one is in Austin in-person, so a strong remote candidate is not competing here. The ML and data engineering roles are the ones the round was raised for: normalizing 29 builder portals with no APIs is the hard problem, and someone who has built scrapers and entity-resolution pipelines against hostile, changing web UIs has an unusually direct match.

Don't make these mistakes
Ben built Spruce for nine years and sold into 24 of the 25 largest apartment operators; he knows what it takes to sell software to the built world and has zero patience for 'construction is ripe for disruption.' Do not pitch a new app or a new interface for contractors; his line is 'the industry does not need another application. It needs the ones it already runs to stop disagreeing.' Robert co-founded Pingboard and spent a decade reconciling HRIS data across systems, so hand-wavy talk about AI reading portals will get a pointed question about how you handle a builder changing its PO format on a Tuesday. Lead with entity resolution, schema drift, and scraping unstructured portal data at scale.
Mistakes that kill Scaffold applications
