Comp AI
Open-source, agentic compliance and security automation

What Comp AI is building
Comp AI is an open-source alternative to Vanta and Drata: an AI-native platform that gets companies through SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA and GDPR and then keeps them there. The codebase is public on GitHub (github.com/trycompai/comp, ~2,000 stars, AGPL-3.0 with a commercial enterprise edition), which is the wedge against incumbents whose agents and integrations are black boxes. Evidence is pulled continuously from 580+ integrations rather than screenshotted by a human; policies are generated per-company from the actual stack instead of a template library; device agents watch encryption, firewall and OS settings; and a live trust-center portal drops any control that stops verifying. The Series A is about the next step, which the founders call continuous cybersecurity. Instead of software that records that security work happened, they want agents that do the work and then verify it: real-time control validation, automated browser-based testing of controls, AI-driven penetration testing across apps and infrastructure, and permissions and accountability tracking for the AI agents companies are now deploying. Lewis's line from the release: 'Security software shouldn't just track the work. It should understand the business, perform the work, and act as risk changes.' The guardrail, per TechCrunch: an agent drafts the policy, a human still approves it. The three founders came from LeapAI, a no-code AI workflow product that hit a million users and shut down for lack of product-market fit. They started Comp AI because getting SOC 2 at Leap was expensive and manual, and turned that into a company with 1,000+ customers in 20 months.
Why this matters
Compliance is a revenue gate, not a cost centre. Lewis's framing in TechCrunch is that SOC 2 reports are deal requirements, so every B2B software company pays for this whether or not they care about security. The incumbents built for point-in-time audits; the market is moving to continuous evidence because customers' security questionnaires now ask what an AI agent accessed and what it tried to do, a question Mariano says Comp is answering with permissions and accountability first. The real numbers: 1,000+ customers, 15x ARR growth year over year, and 10x team growth, all inside 20 months from founding. Grand Ventures' Nathan Owen: 'Growing to more than 1,000 customers this quickly is remarkable.'

How to actually get hired at Comp AI
Why applying the normal way doesn't work
Comp AI runs an applicant tracking system, but hiring managers still work referrals first. A cold application to Comp AI isn't dead, it's just fourth in line behind internal referrals, sourced candidates and recruiter pipelines.
Who to contact at Comp AI
What to show them
A merged or well-scoped PR to github.com/trycompai/comp: a new integration that pulls evidence continuously, or a control-validation test that runs headless and fails loudly when a control drifts. The repo is Next.js, Prisma, Trigger.dev and Bun, so match the stack. If you can't get to a PR, a detailed issue with a reproduction beats a cover letter.

What Comp AI screens for
A $34M A from Roo and Grand on a 20-month-old company is a bet on the transition from compliance automation to continuous security, which is a much bigger category. The founders are explicit that they want in-person hires in Miami or New York and that judgment 'owns what ships.' The open-source repo is the fastest interview loop in the company: the code is public, the issues are public, and a merged PR beats any resume. Founding PMM roles are open now, which is a rare title at a company that already has 1,000 customers.
A tailored CV beats a generic one. Use Comp AI's job description language to clear filters.
Don't make these mistakes
Do not open with 'compliance is broken' or a Vanta/Drata comparison; their homepage already has entire pages on Vanta pricing and Drata competitors, and Lewis has been posting about this since day one. Also skip the 'AI co-founder' pitch angle; he posted publicly that AI co-founders don't ask for equity, meaning he wants people who own outcomes, not people who want to talk about AI. The founders shipped an open-source repo, hit 1,000 customers and grew the team 10x; they respond to people who have shipped in public. Lead with something concrete you built, ideally a PR against github.com/trycompai/comp.
