Wellfound review (2026): the best startup job board, and what it can't do

A review of Wellfound from a competitor — we say that up front so you can weight it. Short version: it's the right default for anyone looking for a startup job, it's free, and its one real weakness is the same thing that makes it good.

Updated September 2026. Written by The Anti Job Board — we compete with some of the products on this page, and say so where it matters.

The short version

Wellfound is the largest startup-only job board, free for candidates, with salary and equity ranges on most listings and direct application to the company. Use it. Its weakness is structural: it is the default, so a good listing is crowded within days, and a role only appears once the company has decided to post it. If your applications aren't getting replies, the problem is timing, not Wellfound — pair it with an earlier source rather than looking for a better board.

What Wellfound is

Wellfound is the job board that used to be AngelList Talent, renamed in 2022 when AngelList split its venture and recruiting products. It is startup-only by design: companies list because they're startups, candidates come because they want one, and the whole product is built around that match — equity shown alongside salary, company stage and funding on the listing, apply-to-founder rather than apply-to-portal.

For candidates it's free, and free without a catch: search, apply, message, all of it. Companies pay for recruiting features. That's the right way round and it hasn't changed.

What it does well

  • Volume. More startup listings than anywhere else, across every stage from pre-seed to late growth. If a startup is hiring publicly, it's probably here.
  • Transparency. Salary and equity ranges on most roles, which is still rare, and company funding and headcount on the listing. You can rule roles out in seconds instead of after a first call.
  • Directness. Applications go to the company — frequently a founder at small companies — and replies come back on-platform. There's no agency layer.
  • Filters that match how people actually search for startup jobs: stage, size, remote, equity, market.
  • Featured and verified-hiring signals that mean something. A company flagged as actively hiring generally is.

Where it falls short

  • It's the default, so it's crowded. A good listing at a known company collects applications fast. The pool is smaller than LinkedIn's — far smaller — but it's a pool, and you're in it with everyone else who filtered the same way.
  • It's late by construction. A role reaches Wellfound when someone at the company posts it, which is days to weeks after the need existed. The moment when applying gets you read — before the pile — has already passed.
  • The smallest companies aren't there yet. A ten-person company that just raised a seed round is hiring through its founder's network and a careers page for a while before it thinks about boards.
  • Response rates are uneven. Direct-to-founder is great when the founder replies; some listings are effectively unattended.

Who it's for

Anyone starting a startup job search — it should be the first tab you open. Especially: people who want equity and want to see it stated; people who want breadth across stages; people outside the YC orbit, where Work at a Startup doesn't reach.

Less so for: engineers who'd rather read a founder's paragraph on Hacker News; people whose problem is reply rate rather than choice; anyone hunting the ten-person seed company that isn't listing yet.

How we compare, honestly

Wellfound has more listings than we ever will. Its salary transparency is better than ours, because we can only show what a company publishes. It's free; our full board and drops are paid. Where we're different is the moment: we watch the careers pages of 4,700+ funded startups, so a role shows up on our board when it opens, up to 48 hours before it reaches Wellfound or LinkedIn. That's a narrow thing to be good at. For a lot of people it's the thing that decides whether the application is read.

Verdict

Use Wellfound. It's the best startup job board and it costs nothing. Then decide whether your problem is finding roles or being read on the ones you find — because if it's the second, no board fixes that, and the answer is arriving earlier than the board.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wellfound legit?

Yes. It's the recruiting product that grew out of AngelList, renamed Wellfound in 2022. Companies on it are real startups; applications go directly to them.

Is Wellfound free?

Free for candidates — searching, applying and messaging. Companies pay for recruiting tools.

Is Wellfound good for getting a job?

It's the most complete startup board, so yes for finding roles. Reply rates depend on the company and on how crowded the listing is; popular roles fill up fast.

Wellfound vs LinkedIn for startup jobs?

Wellfound, clearly — startup-only, salary and equity shown, far smaller applicant pools. LinkedIn is better for researching people and being found by recruiters.

What's better than Wellfound?

Nothing has more startup listings. Different, not better: Work at a Startup for YC companies, Welcome to the Jungle for curated scaleup matches, and earlier sources — careers pages, The Anti Job Board — for roles before they're posted.
